People don't often think about the fact that many people are excluded from social activities due to issues with accessibility and inclusive design. This project focuses on the issues that the hearing impaired have when visiting bars and nightclubs. Many nightlife locations create ambience with dim lighting and loud music. This creates an issue for people who are hearing impaired as they rely heavily on their sight and their ability to sign or lip read in order to communicate and navigate their way around spaces.
After further research it also became evident that those with hearing impairments find spaces without sharp angles easier to navigate. Further issues that were brought up included difficulty lip reading and reading signs in very crowded areas, as well as distractions by loud noises which creates an uncomfortable, buzzing din for the hearing impaired. The goal for this project was to create a space that would cater for the problems encountered by the hearing impaired. The client also wanted the space to be able to be used as an under 18s venue for local youth community events.
Magpie Bar and Nightclub aims to create a unique experience that engages our senses in a new and exciting way. Magpie encourages conversation between friends and strangers of all backgrounds and abilities. Magpie's unique environment makes it welcoming for the hearing impaired as well as providing a fun and safe space for under 18s. The zoning of the space using coloured lighting and symbolic indicators makes the space easy to navigate, and creates an interesting design element.
The layout of the venue allows it to be split diagonally to create a under 18's and over 18s section of the bar. Each room has access to the bar and male, female and accessible toilets. The venue is split into four zones: bar, dance floor, quiet room and bathrooms, to allow for a unique experience for each customer. Every room is separated by soundproof walls and doors and each space is lined with small alcoves that allow someone to step out of the hustlle and bustle and focus on conversation. The bar is custom designed with varying heights making it easier for those in wheelchairs to access the bar counter comfortably. All these elements in combination with the use of acoustic materials create a welcoming and safe environment for those who's access to entertainment is usually limited.
